Pleasant Memories!

With the traditional flowers and music the new 9-member council and Mayor were inaugurated at City Hall on January 2, 1961. This was also the day the City Charter became fully effective.

All League members who studied our City-County government and who worked on committees that pushed Charter legislation, observed at Charter

Commission meetings, stood on street corners handing out "Have You Registered?" and finally "Vote Yes for the Charter" should have an overflowing of pride in accomplishment.

Also of interest to all League members is the establishment of the Office of Medical Examiner. From the study of the Sheriff's office, the need for this department became apparent, and the League had a bill introduced in the Legislature. The Bill failed of passage, so the League recommended its incorporation into the Charter. The Charter Commission accepted the recommendation.

League members who worked so hard for a new jail will feel a glow of pride and achievement when the jail now being built is finally finished and accepted by the Mayor and council. Under the Charter the jail is administered by the Police Department.
