Toxic Substances in our LivesHow SAFE IS THE FOOD YOU EAT? WHAT ARE YOU KILLING WHEN YOU SPRAY YOUR LAWN WITH PESTICIDES? How HEALTHY IS THE ENVIRONMENT IN HAWAII? Thousands of chemicals have been created in this century. Many---pesticides, plastics, synthetics, medicines---we consider a necessary part of our lives. But what are their effects on our environment and our health? Are they as safe as we would like? Panelists at our Annual Meeting will focus on the problems of toxics in our lives. SHARON BOGUE, former hazardous waste inspector for the Hawaii Department of Health, will talk about the toxics we use around the house. LYLE WONG, chief of the Pesticides Branch of the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, will talk about the use of pesticides in the agriculture industry. BILL DENDLE, former environmental aide to Rep. Byron Baker and currently with the Pesticide Hazard Assessment Project, will discuss the overall effect of toxics in our environment. LEONARD ALCANTARA, formerly with the Coast Guard and now an attorney in private practice will discuss the problems of hazardous land sea waste spills from his perspective. A publication on hazardous waste in Hawaii will be ready in early April. This project was funded through grants to the LWV-Hawaii Education Fund, and the Annual Meeting program is an outgrowth of the project.
