Suggest Changes to City Charter

The Honolulu Charter Commission is accepting proposals to change the City Charter. The Charter is like the constitution of the City and Country of Honolulu. The community is invited to submit suggestions to make our city government run better. Deadline for submissions is October 31, 2005.

In December the Commission expects to come up with an initial list of proposed amendments. Public hearings may begin in February 2006.

League members should take the opportunity to make their ideas known to the commission. The commission's website www.honolulu.gov/chc provides the format for submitting suggestions. E-mail: charter@honolulu.gov. Telephone: 592-8622.

Recently, League testified before the City Council in support of a bill strengthening the City Ethics Commission. The Council did not act, saying the change was up to the Charter Commission. So high on League's priorities is allowing the Ethics Commission to levy fines on those violating ethics rules, as the aforementioned bill would have done.

Main thing - get your thinking caps on about what you want to see changed.
